Whether people like to believe it or not, but there are many people who have never left their own territory. As you can tell, any parent would burn out at this rate.

Autism is a very complex neurodevelopmental disorder and due to this face there are many proposed theories on the causes of autism. Even though these theories can explain some cases, it’s hard come up with an exact case for this disorder. What makes autism a very special case is that there are more theories that come from a controversial angle, such as vaccinations, even though there isn’t any convincing scientific evidence to back this up.
Genetics
Genetics is considered one of the most likely reasons autism occurs. It is estimated that 90% of autism is a result of genetics. As you know, genetics is a very complex science that is relatively new in our age of science. It isn’t believed that the particular genes that cause this disorder are inherited, but that they actually are a mutation.
Even though this is believed to be the best theory on the causes of autism, the actual explanation for why these mutations happen is unknown. Some scientists have theorized that it comes from environmental effects and others believe it is a chemical imbalance that causes some parts of the brain to overgrow.
Pesticides
This happens to be one of the prenatal environment theories. A study by the California Department of Public Health reviewed pregnant women that lived near fields that had pesticide being sprayed. The type of pesticide was organochlorine pesticides dicofol and endosulfan. The study concluded that these women were several times more likely to have an autistic child born.
There has been a lot of skepticism of this study, mainly for the reason that there just weren’t enough women involved in it. Some of the pesticides were later tested on lab rats and showed that prenatal exposure to these may contribute to an autistic child being born.
Stress
Stress is believed by some to be one of the leading causes of autism and with all the other research on the effects of stress; it seems highly probable that this could be the case. Studies both in humans and animals have shown that stress during pregnancy can actually lead to disruption in brain development.
Ultrasound
This is one of the causes that fit into the more controversial category. There was a science related study on ultrasound waves can actually disrupt statistically small amount of neurons in neuronal migration. It is believed to be highly unlikely that this would be a cause of autism.
Toxicity From Mercury
Another suggested cause, that is gaining a lot of attention, is the amount of mercury we ingest into our bodies. The FDA actually released a report warning children and the elderly to limit the amount of intake on marine foods like tuna. There are other ways of getting too much mercury, such as living to close to a coal plant.
Studies have shown that the rates of autism actually were much higher for those people that live around mercury sources such as coal.
These are the main causes of autism and I think they deserve some attention to parents or soon to be parents. When we get right down to the facts, the medical community isn’t quite sure what causes this disorder. I think it is apparent for your health and the health of your child to consider all these characteristics.

Tips To Improve Hair Cuts For Children With Autism

For children with autism, getting a hair cut can be a difficult experience. For their parents the experience is often painful and full of stress, tears and frustration.
When my son was first diagnosed with autism my wife and I struggled taking him to get hair cuts. We would often wait weeks past the time when his hair would look ragged and long, just to avoid the barber. After learning some small tips and developing a plan, we now are able to get his hair cut without issue. This process takes time and patience, but is worth the effort. As a father of a child with autism I have been there and understand how difficult it can be to take a child to get their hair cut. I have been slapped, scratched and my son has had a number of meltdowns that have left me on the verge of tears.
I recall specifically one time when I walked into a Circus Cuts and was relieved to not have any people there. As the hair cut progressed my son melted down and after thrashing, scratching and screaming I was blinded by hair, and the smock. As my frustration grew I began almost yelling " I did not sign up for this" and at the same time look up and saw two families just staring at us like we were from another planet. I was at the end of my rope and needed to do something.
We decided to use skills learned from our Applied Behavior Analysis team. The first thing we did was take data on the events that led up to us going to get his hair cut and what scared made him lash out once was in the chair. We knew that his behavior had to stop, but first had to understand why he had these behaviors. Once we did that we were able to come up with a plan. This plan was to slowly get him accustomed to getting his hair cut buy taking it in very small steps. The steps included having him understand all of the steps of a hair cut, what it took to get to the barber and the tools used to cut his hair. Now that he had this information we could start shaping his behavior. We also had to lean what reinforcers worked best for Collin. We already knew that clippers were a problem for him, so we discussed how he would not have to use the clippers and that he would only use the scissors. This discussion included picture cards, and actual scissors and clippers so that he could generalize what we were teaching him.
At the time our son was non verbal and we needed to work on his receptive behavior and develop communication skills through pointing, and eventually verbal cues. Once he had mastered the skills of identification the hair cut process we could move on. The first reinforcer that he had in this process was that he did not have to use the clippers, a huge relief to all of us. After he was able to progress enough, we began to take the small steps to shape his behavior. We would take a step and then go home. Our first step was to talk about his hair cut and get him into the car. When he mastered that without a meltdown, we moved on taking small steps until we go him into the chair and finally able to get his hair cut. The amount of steps necessary will vary with each child, but whether it takes a month or a year, the end result will hopefully be that your child will get a haircut without a meltdown, or at least the bad behaviors will subside.
Today we can go get our hair cut with out incident. He still tells the stylist "scissors only" when he gets in the chair. When he is done, he gets a lollipop (sugar free and organic) and we are off to our next errand or the playground.

Maintaining a Healthy Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension damages the coronary artery lining and eventually coronary blockages form. As blood pressure goes up, the blood strikes the side of the arterial wall with greater force. This causes some injury to the lining of the artery and the wall starts to thicken. Then the blood flow is restricted and the heart has to work harder.
Blood pressure is measured as systolic over diastolic. Systolic measures the heart at work, or the pumping of blood as the heart contracts. Diastolic measures the pumping of blood while the heart is resting.
A normal measurement is less than 130 systolic and less than 85 diastolic. The ideal is less than 120/80. When your measurement is 140/90 or higher you have high blood pressure or hypertension.
Even slight hypertension puts one at risk for a heart attack.
Fortunately, hypertension can be prevented. Finnish researchers found that magnesium and potassium are very powerful blood pressure regulators. A diet, which is high in these two minerals, is very effective in controlling blood pressure. Bananas, milk, yogurt, wheat germ, and strawberries are good sources of these minerals. These minerals are available in supplements but you should check with your doctor before taking the supplements.
A diet high in fruits and veggies is also helpful. Nutritionists recommend eight daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Another recommended food is salsa and a half-cup of salsa is equal to a full serving of vegetables.
Most overweight people tend to have high blood pressure. If you are overweight you can lower you blood pressure three points by losing just ten pounds. Research shows that people who eat a breakfast that is low in fat but high in nutrients can do this. And even if you are not overweight, the low fat high nutrient breakfast will still help keep your blood pressure at optimal levels.
Another important factor in lowering blood pressure is relaxation. Epinephrine and cortisol are two stress hormones that raise blood pressure. Engaging in an activity that relaxes you decreases the levels of these hormones. A sure fire way to do this is to introduce some humor into your life. Read a funny book; watch a comedy sitcom or attend a comedy show. Whatever causes you to laugh will also relax you.
Moderate exercise is also effective in preventing hypertension. You don’t have to work up a sweat at your local gym. Engaging in any aerobic activity that you enjoy is just as effective. The easiest one is walking if that is something you enjoy doing. However, when involved in any aerobic activity, you need to perform it for at least thirty minutes to derive the maximum benefit.
Also, remember when doing aerobic exercises you should always be "in oxygen." This means you should not be short of breath at any time you are actively engaged. For example, if you are walking, you should follow a pace at which you can carry on a conversation and not be out of breath. If you don’t have a partner to converse with, try singing.
There are many hypertension medications available and if you have severe hypertension, your doctor will certainly prescribe these. However, many of these drugs have side effects, some of which are just beginning to be discovered. It is very much to your advantage if you can maintain your blood pressure at healthy levels through lifestyle changes and avoid the use of prescription drugs.
